Dance Week 4

This week the group that presented did a great job and I loved their activity. They split the class into 4 groups and assigned an element to each group as well as four related words. For example, I was in the Fire group and our four words were crackling, sparking, flaming and melting. We then had to develop a series of movements using the ABA format to represent fire and our four words. This is also a great cross-curricular activity in terms of FNMI, social studies, or even science (the elements). The dance element that we focused on today were time and force. We also focused on Choreographic Form in terms of themes such as Canon,  A choreographic form in which a dance phrase is performed by more than one soloist or group and begins at different times so that the phrases overlap, and Narrative,  A choreographic form that follows a storyline, often conveys a specific message, and usually includes an introduction, rising action, a climax, and a resolution.  ...

Drama Week 4

For warm up in todays drama class we did an activity called 'Fill in the Space' which I thought was fun. It is an activity where the class forms a circle and one person enters the middle and strikes a tableaux pose. Then, another student comes into the middle of the circle and, using the first students pose, creates their own pose that works off of the first pose. I think this is a fun idea that allows for students to share their creativity and imagination. This could be modified for students by explaining the poses for students with visual impairments. The theory that we focused on today was the Multimodal Theory, in which students can create in any order that they wish, using elements from their life etc, to create a final product. The group this week focused their presentation on FNMI and integrating FNMI issues and topics into the drama classroom. The group used a FNMI book as their inspiration and led the class in a number of different activities. One of the activiti...

Dance Week 3

This week in Dance class we focused on the element of body, with special focus on the parts of our body, and the shapes we can make our body into. We also focused on locomotor and non-locomotor movements. The warm up activity this week was called mirroring, and I thought that it was a great activity and one that I think elementary school children would enjoy. The activity was simply mirroring what your partner was doing, in an attempt to be moving in synchronization with your partner while mimicking his or her moves. This was a great way to explore body movements. This activity could me modified by having students sit down, or by only choosing to move upper, or lower parts of your body. In addition, it can be done with verbal instruction for students who are visually impaired. This activity could also be used as a cross-curricular element as you can relate it to math in terms of symmetry and reflections/transitions. We also focused on the creative process, and how it manifests it...

Drama Week 3

This week we started the class off with some opening warm-up activities that I thought were fun. I actually have done one of the activities with my last placement class and they really enjoyed it. The one that I did in my last placement was the Embodied Scale, where students have to arrange themselves in order of their birthday month without speaking. In my placement, we then made it more difficult by having them stand in order of their actual birthdate (day and month). The students really enjoyed the fact that they had to try and communicate with each other without actually speaking. This is an activity that I will use again in the classroom as the students have fun with it. We also took part in an activity called Atom, in which we walked along floor tiles, in a straight line, until Melissa called out a number. Whatever number she called, is the amount of people you had to find to form a group. This is a great activity for group formation, and a strategy I may use outside of just the ...
